Scholes are a family farming company, based at Driffield in the East Riding of Yorkshire.
The business started in 1967 by its founder, John Scholes in the village of Garton on the Wolds when he purchased Railton Farm, which had approximately 10 acres (4 hectares) of land. John’s philosophy to business was always simple; work hard and to a very high standard, and these principles stand true within the business to this day.
The farmed area grew steadily in the early years of the business with potatoes becoming the first important vegetable crop from the late 1960’s onwards. Farmland area continued to slowly increase as demand for produce saw the need to farm increasing areas of arable land.
To further compliment the field production of vegetable cropping, in 1993 the family decided to improve the appearance and saleability of its crops by washing and packing produce (potatoes) ready for supply to retail customers.
As part of the continuing growth of the business, land also began being farmed under contract agreements on behalf of other landowners. This has increased to the present day whereby a wide range of farm management solutions is offered by the company.
Current field production activities amounts to circa 2000 hectares, of which 600 hectares are dedicated to vegetable production and the remaining 1300 hectares are combinable crops. Meanwhile our crop packing activities amount to an annual quantity of over 30,000 tonnes of vegetables packed and delivered by our own fleet, ready to retail.
