Vining Peas

Scholes have been successfully growing vining Peas on contract for Birdseye for many years. The peas are sown in spring in to a fine moist seed bed. The seed bed is prepared in the autumn of the previous year to ensure that the soil is worked in the optimum condition to reduce damage to the soil structure. The Peas are drilled using a special precision drill which optimises the seeds depth and spacing within the row. The reason for all this precision at drilling is to secure a good harvest of consistent quality crop to meet the demand of the final consumer. The crop grows fast and will be ready for harvest.

The peas are harvested when they reach specific level of tenderness. This specification is measured using a “Tenderometer”, which gives a value known as a “TR”. The crop is harvested using a fleet of Pea Viners to ensure that the needs of the factory which is located in Hull are met.

A constant line of communication is open between the field and factory to manage the work rates and flow of product returning to the factory. The process of harvesting to freezing all takes place within 150 minutes to maintain the highest nutritional value and quality possible.
